Overview
When deploying QuantAQ air quality sensors outdoors, it is important to take precautions to ensure connections are weather-rated to prevent water ingress and electrical fire hazards.
Common Solutions
Safely connecting to AC power
Connecting your sensor's wall adapter to an AC power outlet outdoors requires a weather-proof outlet cover. If you do not have access to a weather-rated outdoor outlet, see the section below on alternate measures.
Safely using power strips and extension cords
Extension cords and power strips are necessary if multiple sensors are being deployed or if the sensor's DC power cable is too short to reach the sensor. In the case of the latter, we strongly recommend using an AC extension cord instead of a longer DC power cable or chaining multiple DC power cables together, as there will be voltage drops across long DC cables that will affect sensor performance.
When using a power strip or extension cord outdoors, an outdoor electrical box must be used to prevent water ingress at the AC-AC plug. There are numerous weatherproof junction boxes available online (example 1, example 2) that prevent water intrusion. Note that these boxes should still be elevated and/or placed in an area where water cannot pool up.
Weatherproofing DC-DC adapter installation (legacy MODULAIR sensors)
Legacy QuantAQ MODULAIR and MODULAIR-PM units require a 5 to 12V DC-DC adapter to be connected to the battery's output. To prevent water ingress, this adapter must be mounted with the cables facing downwards and with minimal strain on the cables (as imaged below).
